An art workshop led by Rachel Sutherland inspired by the exhibition of material from the Burrell Collection on display in Berwick

Jacob Maris: Washing Day. North East Museums on behalf of Northumberland County Council.

This art workshop, led by Rachel Sutherland, is in connection with the works from the Burrell Collection currently on display in the Granary Gallery, Berwick , Dewars Lane TD151HJ. Opening hours 31st Oct -21st Feb 2027 Weds – Sun 11 -4pm. Entrance is free.

Inspired by the collector’s eye, we will scan the exhibition to see what jumps out for each of us. Everyone will be different. Some may choose an object to study and therefore will need to photograph it. It will be a loosening up exercise to engage spontaneously, intuitively and omit the time spent on second guessing. If you are a collector, and would like to bring an object from your own collection, please do so, and use that as your model for the day. We will use sketches as an exercise before taking on the finished piece which will be in a material and style of your choice: colour, black and white, collage, sketches. The brief is wide and individual interpretation is emphasised. 

The workshop begins at 10 am with a brief tour of the exhibition led by Rachel. We return to the conference room for coffee and Rachel will introduce the themes of the day. We break at 12.30 for lunch and resume at 1pm. You can order food from the cafe downstairs at the Granary, or bring a packed lunch. The workshop ends at 3pm.

There are 11 places available, and beginners and more experienced students are equally welcome.

Materials:

A camera/phone to take a picture of an object.

Strong paper, canvas or board A3 or A4

Waterbased medium (water colours, acrylic, pencils, pastels)

Sketchbook and/or pieces of A4 drawing paper. 

Scissors and sticky tape. 

Brushes

Pencils

Pens

Pastels oil/dry

Water containers

Table cloth (optional)  and paper towels.
