Lowry, the Sea and Berwick

August 20 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

An art workshop inspired by Lowry’s paintings of local Berwick views

This workshop seeks to explore your own views of Berwick, within, but not limited to, the framework of Lowry’s technique, sense of perspective and of his colour palette. There will be an opportunity to sketch locally, or you can choose to work indoors from photos or sketches.

The course participants may work in watercolour, acrylic or oil.

This art workshop, led by local artist Rachel Sutherland, is inspired by the paintings of LS Lowry, some of whose work is on display at the Granary Gallery Berwick upon Tweed TD151ES. The exhibition is open Tues -Sun 11- 4pm from 25th May – 13th October 2024. Entry is £5.

The workshop begins with a short tour of the exhibition by Rachel, followed by coffee in the YHA conference rooms where the workshop will be held. Rachel will introduce the themes of the day and be there to discuss, advise and guide as you create your own piece of work.

For the remainder of the morning you may work on sketching a nearby local view which you can then develop into a painting in the afternoon session. If you prefer to stay indoors please bring sketches or photos of local views to work from.

We will break for lunch at 12.30pm for 30 minutes, and you can order food from the YHA cafe downstairs, or bring a packed lunch. We will resume at 1pm and finish at 3pm.

There will be 10 places in the workshop. Beginners and more experienced students are welcome. Please dress appropriately for the weather if you wish to sketch outdoors.

Materials to bring:

There will be easels and tables available to work on, please bring your own board if needed.

Please bring your own materials such as canvas, robust watercolour paper or board, water based paints, brushes and graphite pencils and sketchbook. There will be a limited supply of extra materials for those in need. If you do wish to bring oil, please invest in Windsor and Newton Artisan Water based paints which come in tubes.
