John Lavery, Edwardian Portraitist and Glasgow Boy

Sir John Lavery :’The Green Sofa’ 1908
John Lavery was an extraordinary and sensitive artist who was ahead of his time. In this lecture, Prof Maria Chester will analyse his work from being a Glasgow Boy to his latest works done in North America in which we can see him develop as an Scottish Colourist. He travelled all his life accompanied by his lovely American wife, Hazel, who was born in Chicago. She was deeply involved with the Irish cause ( Lavery was born in Ireland). He was a portraitist of the Royal family, as well as the English nobility, Russian dancers and the typical “dandy” of the so-called Crazy Twenties.
BEA in partnership with Berwick Visual Arts has prepared a series of lectures, tours and art workshops planned to support ‘The Glasgow Boys and Girls’ exhibition at the Granary Gallery, Berwick, which we now hope will open in September 2020
