Japan in Miniature
December 4 @ 10:15 am - 11:45 am
£4.00
We welcome back Madeleine Ravetta for another of her entertaining talks, an unusual subject which promises to appeal to everyone, even to those who have no interest in stamps! Madeleine is giving this talk in aid of Berwick Cancer Cars, for which she is a volunteer driver.
Since 1871, the Japanese post office has produced some of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating stamps. In this illustrated talk Madeleine will take you on a tour through some of the miniature treasures and surprising stories that can be found in the postage stamps of Japan. She will show you uniquely Japanese artefacts and arts, from Hokusai’s “The Great wave off Kanagawa” to Hello Kitty, and from Kabuki theatre to sumo wrestling, as well as curiosities such as stamps made from rice paper, stamps in the shape of animals or sushi, and emergency stamps issued after the country’s entire stock was destroyed in an Earthquake.
Madeleine’s talk,10.15-11.15, our last in-person event before Christmas, will be followed by a social half hour. Hot drinks and festive themed refreshments will be served!
