Botany for Beginners
June 6 @ 10:00 am - June 20 @ 2:00 pm£18.00
This introduction to botany will be taught in two classroom sessions using a mixture of digital slides and live plants by Chris Metherell of the Natural History Society of Northumberland. Chris is a past president of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland.
Chris will then lead a field trip to Lindisfarne where we will use the identification skills taught in the first two sessions.
Monday, 6th June 10 am – 12 noon: Basic plant anatomy: how to identify the different parts of plants.
Monday, 13th June 10 am to 12 noon: Identifying common plant families.
The two classroom sessions will be held at the William Elder Building.
Monday, 20th June: Field trip to Lindisfarne.
Crossings are clear from 11.15 to 18.55. We will meet on Lindisfarne at 2.00pm at the bus shelter at the north end of the main car park on the island (about NU125425), and spend a couple of hours examining some of the many plant species that can be found there. You will need suitable clothing and footwear for outdoor walking and sun protection. All students will need their own hand lens in order to identify plant parts in the field, and these can be purchased inexpensively in advance from Summerfield Books:
