Art of the 20th century
January 19 @ 10:00 am - February 16 @ 12:00 pm£30.00
This is a course of five two-hour lectures by Prof Maria Chester .
We begin this survey of western art in the 20th century with an introduction to the various art movements which arose in Europe before and after WW1: the art of the Avant-Gardes. Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, and Surrealism are some of the art movements we shall explore. Modern art travelled to New York following the political upheavals leading to WW2, and North America saw the birth of the Black Mountain College, and the rise of Abstract Expressionism. Pop Art, Fluxus, Op Art and Minimalism blossomed in the 1960’s, followed by Postmodernism as the century drew to a close. We will also examine the social and political context in which modern art found expression on both sides of the Atlantic.
This highly illustrated course is suitable for complete beginners and all are welcome.
