Berwick Music Series 2023

The Berwick Music Series 2023 had the title Classical Music – Folk Influences.

All composers are influenced by the sounds around them, from the sound of horses trotting or galloping in the pre-modern era to that of machines, influencing minimalist music of today. One important source of musical ideas is the prevalent folk music of the time, and the 2023 programme reflected the influences of folk music on classical music.

We had performers of the highest calibre, playing music from Bach to that composed in the present day: concert performances by Darragh Morgan, Fiona Winning and the Frankland Quartet; a folk session headlined by Northumbrian piper, Chris Ormston; and we joined forces with Berwick Literary Festival to welcome special guest journalist and BBC Radio 3 presenter Kate Molleson. The concerts were supplemented by two talks by Mike Worboys on aspects of the music being performed.

We had an education project, Weaving Threads, which engaged extensively with schools in Berwick and the Borders; and we had an International Composition Competition, which attracted entries of the highest quality.

BMS 2023 was a great success. We are very grateful to the support we received from our audiences, from the Music teachers in Berwick’s schools, from our volunteers and from our sponsors. It wouldn’t have happened without you!
