The volcanic rocks and Old Red Sandstones of Eyemouth

July 18 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

£6.00
The cliffs of Eyemouth Fort include rare volcanic lava, excellent examples of Old Red Sandstones and an unusual exposure of glacial deposits

Join local geologist Alison Tymon for this walk, to include Eyemouth beach, where you will see volcanic lavas and Old Red Sandstones, as well as some of the oldest glacial deposits in Scotland, with some optional walking over shingle and stones to reach the furthest point under the cliffs. Then we will take the coastal path and walk about half a mile around Eyemouth Fort headland to see the site of the Eyemouth volcano and views towards St Abbs. The total distance is about a mile. An information leaflet will be provided.

We meet at 10.00 am at Eyemouth Leisure Centre, North Street, TD14 5ET, a short walk from the bus stop at Eyemouth Co-op. To travel by bus from Berwick, catch the 09.45 at the 235 terminus in Chapel Street (next to the library) and return on the 13.10 from Eyemouth. The walk will last about two hours until 12.00, so there is free time to find lunch in Eyemouth before travelling back. Due to the nature of this event, places are limited to 15 and so must be booked in advance.

Please note that although we will carry out a risk assessment for this outdoor event, it is taken wholly at the participant’s own risk. Therefore, participants are required to take full responsibility for their own health, safety and wellbeing whilst taking part. In particular, participants must ensure that they have suitable/weather appropriate clothing and footwear. Walking shoes/boots are recommended. Walking poles for balance, if required.

Our Field Trips are generally accessible to all moderately fit persons, but not all will be suitable for persons who have reduced mobility. If in doubt, the onus will be on participants to establish the position in this regard before booking. During this event we will be walking the sandy shore, and encounter shingle and stones. We will also walk a section of the uneven coastal path which is accessed from the beach by steps.

There is no need to print out and bring your ticket, as we will have a record of your booking.

If you book this course online, we will hold your personal data in accordance with our privacy policy. If you do not wish us to hold your personal data, please book by post (see www.berwickea.co.uk) and do not supply an email address.
